Where to ride in Auckland
Five rides worth the trip, from a flat coastal spin you can do on your first evening to a full day in the Waitākeres. Which bike suits which is noted against each.
Tāmaki Drive — flat, coastal, about 20 km return
From the city out past Ōkahu Bay and Mission Bay to St Heliers, mostly on a separated path with the harbour beside you the whole way. Flat, well surfaced, and busy on a fine weekend. It is the obvious first ride if the bike arrived last night and you want a feel for it before committing to a bigger day.
Best on: the road bike.
The Northwestern cycleway — flat, about 25 km each way
A separated path running beside the motorway from the city out towards Westgate, and the least stressful way to get clear of central Auckland under your own steam. More useful as the approach to Riverhead than as a destination in itself.
Best on: road or gravel.
Waiheke Island — rolling, 40–60 km depending on the loop
Take the ferry from downtown with the bike and ride the island. It is hillier than it looks from the boat — short steep pinches rather than long climbs — and the reward is quiet roads, bays and vineyards. Allow a full day, and check the ferry's bike capacity at busy times.
Best on: the road bike, with the bikepacking kit if you are staying over.
The Waitākere Ranges — hilly, 60–90 km
West of the city, and the serious road ride in Auckland: Scenic Drive along the ridge, then a descent to Piha or Karekare if you want the coast. Sustained climbing, native bush, and very little traffic once you are past Titirangi. The 46/30 crankset and 11-34 cassette on every bike we hire exist for exactly this.
Best on: the road bike.
Riverhead Forest — gravel, 30–50 km of loops
Forestry roads north-west of the city, and the best gravel riding within easy reach of Auckland. Loops string together to whatever length you want. Access depends on forestry operations and it does close, so check the current status before you go.
Best on: gravel.
Before you go
A securely fastened helmet is required by law in New Zealand, for riders of every age. One comes with every bike we hire.
Every bike goes out with a rear light, a lock and a maintenance kit. Auckland weather turns quickly and the west coast is exposed — take a layer even when the morning looks settled.
